Elwood Edwards, the Cleveland television station WKYC graphics and camera operator whose voice became globally famous for the iconic AOL email greeting “You’ve Got Mail,” has passed away at the age of 74. His former employer confirmed he died after a prolonged illness.
The Voice Behind AOL’s Iconic Greetings
Edwards is instantly recognizable to anyone who used AOL in the 1990s and early 2000s. Over 30 years ago, he recorded four key phrases for America Online (AOL), including “Welcome,” “You’ve Got Mail,” “Files Done,” and “Goodbye.” These phrases became a defining part of the AOL experience and were heard by hundreds of millions of users worldwide.

In 1989, Edwards’ wife, Karen, who worked for Quantum Computer Services (which later became AOL), overheard a conversation by AOL’s CEO Steve Case about adding a voice to the AOL software. She suggested her husband, and Edwards recorded the phrases on a cassette deck in their living room.
From Humble Beginnings to Worldwide Fame
“I had no idea it would become what it did; I don’t think anybody did,” Edwards reflected in a 2019 interview on the Silent Giants with Corey Cambridge podcast. “Suddenly, AOL took off… I remember standing in line at CompUSA and seeing stacks of AOL CDs and thinking, ‘My voice is on every one of those, and nobody has a clue.'”
His voice became a lasting part of the internet era, and while he was unknown to many, his phrases became ingrained in popular culture.
A Long Career Behind the Scenes
In addition to his work as the voice of AOL, Edwards spent decades working at Cleveland’s WKYC television station, where he was known for his versatility. From camera operator to graphics specialist, he was a “jack-of-all-trades” and a valued colleague. Frank Macek, WKYC’s senior broadcast director, was a close friend of Edwards for over 15 years. He praised Edwards for his generosity in sharing his broadcast expertise with others.
“Every time someone would visit WKYC, they’d recognize him,” Macek recalled. “There was such an association between his voice and AOL for so long that he became an instant celebrity as a result.”
Edwards also made appearances on TV, including a segment on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he read various phrases suggested by the audience.

Early Career and Love for Working Behind the Scenes
Born in New Bern, North Carolina, Edwards graduated from high school in the state before beginning his radio career. He later transitioned to television, where he became a booth announcer and hosted a radio show. Despite his voice’s fame, Edwards always preferred working behind the scenes.
“I didn’t enjoy being on camera as much as I enjoyed being behind the scenes,” he shared during his Silent Giants podcast interview.
Edwards’ legacy as the voice of AOL’s “You’ve Got Mail” will remain a cherished part of internet history, and his contributions to both broadcasting and popular culture will not be forgotten.
