Chinese-born cryptocurrency entrepreneur Justin Sun has fulfilled his promise to eat the banana from Maurizio Cattelan’s infamous 2019 artwork Comedian during a press conference in Hong Kong. The artwork, a banana duct-taped to a wall, was purchased by Sun last week at a Sotheby’s auction in New York for a staggering $6.2 million (£4.9 million).
A Performance Within the Artwork’s History
Sun’s action adds a new chapter to the controversial artwork’s history. Comedian has been eaten twice before: once by a performance artist in 2019 and again by a South Korean student in 2023. However, neither of these individuals paid anything for their performances. Sun, by contrast, not only paid for the artwork but highlighted that eating it in a public forum has now become part of its evolving narrative.
“Eating it at a press conference can also become a part of the artwork’s history,” Sun said, humorously adding, “It’s much better than other bananas.”
The Costliest Banana in the World?
Before the auction, a fresh banana costing just 35 cents was used to replace the rotting fruit. Sun acquired not just the installation rights but also the instructions on how to periodically replace the banana. At Friday’s press event, attendees were handed bananas and rolls of duct tape as souvenirs.
“Everyone has a banana to eat,” Sun declared.

Cryptocurrency Parallels
Sun, the 34-year-old founder of the Tron blockchain network, likened the artwork to cryptocurrency and NFTs (non-fungible tokens). He drew parallels between the abstract value of the banana artwork and digital assets, noting how both derive their worth solely from collective perception and demand.
NFTs, like Comedian, lack intrinsic value but are traded on platforms, including Sun’s own network, at high prices determined by buyers.
Controversies Surrounding Sun
Sun is no stranger to controversy. Last year, he was charged by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for allegedly offering and selling unregistered security tokens. He denies the allegations, and the case remains unresolved.
A Big Week for Sun
In addition to his artwork purchase, Sun recently disclosed a $30 million investment in a crypto project backed by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump. This investment showcases his continued commitment to high-profile ventures in both the art and crypto worlds.
An Eccentric Statement on Value
For Sun, eating the banana wasn’t just a quirky act but a symbolic statement. By merging the absurdity of contemporary art with the abstract value of cryptocurrency, he continues to position himself at the intersection of art, technology, and finance.
