Chinese Premier Li Qiang inaugurated the Chinese-funded Gwadar International Airport in Pakistan’s Balochistan province virtually on Monday, amidst recent security challenges posed by separatist militants. During his visit to Islamabad for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit on October 15-16, Li, alongside Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, marked the occasion, marking the first visit by a Chinese premier to Pakistan in 11 years.

In his address at the inauguration ceremony, Premier Li highlighted the airport’s significance in enhancing regional security in Gwadar, integrating port shipping capabilities, and stimulating investment and trade opportunities in Pakistan’s western regions. China’s substantial investments in Pakistan under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) have aimed to bolster regional trade and connectivity through extensive infrastructure and energy projects.

Li emphasized China’s commitment to collaborative and sustainable development with Pakistan, underscoring their joint efforts under the Belt and Road Initiative. The ceremony also witnessed the signing of multiple memorandums of understanding (MoUs) aimed at deepening cooperation in various sectors, including livelihood improvement, technology, water management, and security.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif echoed Li’s sentiments, stressing the transformative economic impact of the new airport on Gwadar and Pakistan as a whole. He pledged close collaboration with China to advance CPEC’s second phase and ensure peace and security for both nations.

The leaders’ discussions encompassed bilateral relations, regional issues, and the timely completion of ongoing CPEC projects. Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to safeguarding Chinese interests and projects within its borders.
