British author Samantha Harvey has been awarded the 2024 Booker Prize for her novel Orbital, making her the first woman to win the prestigious literary honor since 2019. The announcement was made at a ceremony at Old Billingsgate in London, where Harvey’s book was crowned the winner of the £50,000 ($64,000) prize.

A Timely and Powerful Novel

Orbital is a poignant exploration of astronauts observing Earth from space, offering reflections on human life, geopolitics, and the fragility of borders. In her acceptance speech, Harvey’s work was hailed for its ability to resonate in a year marked by geopolitical crises and environmental concerns, with 2024 projected to be one of the warmest years on record.

Harvey’s Literary Journey

Harvey, who was longlisted for the Booker Prize in 2009 for her debut novel The Wilderness, is the 19th woman to win the Booker since its inception in 1969. The win follows a series of notable victories by women in recent years, including the joint win in 2019 by Bernardine Evaristo for Girl, Woman, Other and Margaret Atwood for The Testaments, the sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale.

A Record Number of Female Nominees

This year’s Booker Prize saw a historic number of female nominees, with five women shortlisted for the award. At 136 pages, Orbital is the second-shortest Booker-winning novel, following only Penelope Fitzgerald’s Offshore (1979). Harvey’s novel explores the lives of six astronauts aboard the International Space Station as they circle the Earth, observing both the beauty and fragility of life below.

Judges Praise Harvey’s Ambitious and Lyrical Prose

Edmund de Waal, chairman of the Booker Prize judges, praised Orbital for its lyrical language and depth, calling it a “novel propelled by the beauty of 16 sunrises and 16 sunsets.” He described the book as both hopeful and timeless, capturing “the sheer, amazing force of human want” and offering a vision of the world that is at once strange and familiar. The judges emphasized that their unanimous choice was based purely on the novel’s artistic merit, without regard to gender, ethnicity, or any external agendas.

“We wanted everything,” de Waal said. “Orbital is our book. Samantha Harvey has written a novel that explores our world in a way that feels both new and deeply urgent.”

A Story of Loss and Resilience

The novel takes place over the course of 24 hours, with the astronauts making 16 orbits around Earth. It touches on themes of loss, human fragility, and the environmental challenges facing the planet, including the imminent threat of a typhoon. Orbital’s unique narrative perspective and poetic style captivated the judges, who found the book both thought-provoking and emotionally powerful.

The Judges’ Diverse Panel

This year’s judging panel was made up of a diverse group of literary figures, including novelist Sara Collins, The Guardian fiction editor Justine Jordan, Chinese-American author Yiyun Li, and musician and composer Nitin Sawhney. The panel’s decision to award Orbital the prize was unanimous, a testament to the novel’s universal appeal and depth.

A Special Reception with Queen Camilla

Earlier in the day, the shortlisted authors, including Yael van der Wouden, Rachel Kushner, Anne Michaels, Charlotte Wood, Percival Everett, and Samantha Harvey, attended a reception with Queen Camilla. This marked the Queen’s first public engagement since recovering from a chest infection.
