A second Australian woman, Holly Bowles, has died after consuming contaminated alcohol in Laos, the Australian government confirmed on Friday. This marks the sixth fatality linked to suspected methanol poisoning.

Death of Holly Bowles and Her Friend

Holly Bowles, 19, passed away in a hospital in neighboring Thailand, where she had been evacuated for emergency treatment. Her friend, who was also affected, died the previous day in another Thai hospital. Bowles’ father, Shaun Bowles, shared the heartbreaking news, saying, “It is with broken hearts, and we are so sad to say that our beautiful girl Holly is now at peace.”

Ongoing Investigation into the Tragedy

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong expressed her condolences, stating that the government would continue to work with Lao authorities to investigate what she called a “tragedy.” “I know tonight all Australians will be holding both families in our hearts,” Wong added.

Six Tourists Dead in Vang Vieng After Tainted Alcohol Consumption

The deaths of Bowles and her friend bring the total fatalities to six, including two Danes, a Briton, an American, and the two Australians. All of the victims had visited Vang Vieng, a popular tourist town in Laos known for its scenic beauty and foreign backpacker crowd. The Lao state-run news agency KPL reported that authorities are gathering evidence and witness accounts related to the suspected consumption of “tainted alcoholic beverages.” An official statement is expected soon.

Methanol Poisoning and Counterfeit Alcohol Concerns

Methanol poisoning, often caused by consuming counterfeit or homemade spirits, has become a significant concern in Laos. The country has seen an increase in counterfeit versions of well-known alcohol brands, which are often mixed with methanol, a toxic substance. The U.S. and Australian governments have both issued warnings to their citizens to exercise caution when consuming alcohol in Laos.

Methanol’s Toxic Effects

Methanol, a substance commonly used as an industrial solvent, pesticide, and alternative fuel, is highly toxic to humans. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has highlighted the risks associated with methanol ingestion, which can lead to severe health complications or death.

International Alerts and Precautions

In light of the fatalities, the U.S. embassy in Laos issued a warning urging American citizens to be cautious when consuming spirit-based drinks. They advised tourists to purchase alcohol from licensed vendors and to inspect bottles for signs of tampering or counterfeiting to reduce the risk of methanol poisoning.
