Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has retained the critical finance minister portfolio and reappointed Harini Amarasuriya as prime minister, aiming for a robust recovery from the nation’s ongoing financial crisis.

New Cabinet Appointments

Following his coalition’s historic victory, securing 159 out of 225 seats in the recent general election, Dissanayake also reinstated veteran politician Vijitha Herath as the foreign affairs minister. Dissanayake has held the finance minister position since his election in September, and he will continue in this role as Sri Lanka navigates its most severe economic downturn since gaining independence from Britain in 1948.

IMF Review and Legislative Agenda

An International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation is currently in Colombo to conduct a third review of its $2.9 billion program, which is anticipated to release approximately $337 million. The new parliament is set to convene on Thursday to elect a speaker, after which Dissanayake will outline his key policy priorities to the newly elected lawmakers.

Commitment to Accountability and Change

In a speech following the swearing-in ceremony, Dissanayake emphasized the importance of accountability in governance. “This power comes with accountability to the people, and it should be wielded with humility, restraint, and boundaries. I have every confidence in this cabinet and parliament,” he stated. He added, “The real work we will be judged on begins now.”

Economic Challenges Ahead

Sri Lanka, home to 22 million people, suffered an economic crisis in 2022 due to a severe foreign currency shortage, leading to a sovereign default and a contraction of 7.3% in 2022, followed by a 2.3% decline last year.

Looking ahead, the president will need to present an interim budget in the coming weeks, balancing the need to reduce taxes and enhance welfare—key promises from his election campaign—while ensuring compliance with the IMF program.
