Artificial intelligence is emerging as a potential tool in the fight against impaired driving, as the first-ever trial of AI technology to assist police in detecting and charging offenders has begun.

The AI system utilizes the same mobile ‘AI cameras’ currently used to monitor mobile phone use and seatbelt compliance. This time, however, the technology is analyzing image data from passing vehicles to detect potential signs of impairment in drivers. If the system detects a possible impairment, it immediately alerts police officers stationed further down the road. Unlike the mobile phone or seatbelt violations, which are flagged for later review, impaired driving alerts are acted upon in real-time.

Police officers already have the authority to stop any vehicle on suspicion of impairment and can perform roadside drug or alcohol tests if they believe a driver is under the influence.

The AI trial is being conducted by Devon & Cornwall Police throughout December as part of the Vision Zero South West campaign, aimed at reducing fatalities and injuries on local roads. Superintendent Simon Jenkinson explained, “With nearly 14,000 miles of road in our area, camera technology helps us target resources more effectively, ensuring officers are deployed based on intelligence.”

The AI cameras used in the trial are developed by Acusensus, an Australian company founded after a tragic accident involving a driver distracted by a mobile phone. Geoff Collins, Acusensus’ UK general manager, clarified that the AI system is not designed to definitively determine impairment but instead mimics a police officer’s ability to spot potential issues. He compared the system’s purpose to that of an experienced officer who might instinctively flag a vehicle as suspicious based on its driving style.

While some critics express concerns over constant monitoring, Collins emphasized the responsibility that comes with driving. “There are rules of the road, and with cars weighing two tons, it’s vital to have safety measures in place,” he said, adding that the perception of being monitored can encourage safer behavior on the road.

Concerns were raised about an over-reliance on camera technology in law enforcement, which could lead to declining driving standards and increased anti-social driving behavior. Collins acknowledged the debate, stating that while cameras are valuable for detecting speeding, other dangerous driving behaviors like using mobile phones or driving under the influence need to be addressed. He also pointed out that although many police officers want more road policing resources, budget cuts have limited their numbers, making technologies like AI essential for maximizing the efficiency of the existing police force.

As police resources dwindle, AI technology offers a pragmatic solution to enhance road safety. While Collins recognizes the concerns about surveillance, he stresses the importance of adapting to current realities to ensure public safety on the roads.
