Rory Callum Sykes, a former Australian child star, tragically lost his life as wildfires devastated his family’s 17-acre Mount Malibu TV Studios estate on January 8. Sykes, 32, was in his cottage when the flames consumed the property.
A Life of Resilience and Inspiration
Born blind with cerebral palsy on July 29, 1992, Sykes overcame numerous challenges through surgeries and therapies, regaining his sight and learning to walk. Known for his motivational speeches, he inspired audiences worldwide, often emphasizing, “It doesn’t matter what happens to you in life, it’s what you do about it that counts.”
Sykes co-founded Happy Charity, an organization aimed at offering “Hope, Happiness & Health to those that are Hurting.” He also worked as a consultant for organizations like the Tony Robbins Foundation and the Cerebral Palsy Alliance.
A Mother’s Heartbreak
Shelley Sykes, Rory’s mother, shared her devastation on social media, describing her son as “beautiful” and “wonderful.” She recounted her desperate attempt to extinguish wildfire cinders with a hose but was thwarted by a lack of water supply.
“Mom, leave me,” he reportedly told her. “No mom can leave their kid,” she said, adding that her broken arm prevented her from moving him to safety.
A Global Life
Born in Britain, Sykes lived in Australia before moving to the United States. He frequently traveled with his mother, visiting destinations from Africa to Antarctica. Shelley called him “a gift” who shared a birthday with her and his grandmother.
Support from Australia
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) confirmed its support for Sykes’ family and is liaising with local authorities in California. “Our thoughts are with them,” a DFAT spokesperson said.
Remembering a Legacy of Hope
Rory Callum Sykes’ life serves as a powerful reminder of perseverance, positivity, and the impact of resilience in the face of adversity. His mother, fans, and supporters around the world mourn the loss of a man who turned challenges into opportunities to inspire others.
