President Joe Biden has ordered U.S. flags across the country to be flown at half-staff on January 20 in memory of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29 at the age of 99. This coincides with President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, sparking criticism from Trump and his supporters.

Trump Criticizes Decision Timing
Former President Donald Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the timing of the tribute, calling it inappropriate during his inauguration. Writing on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump accused Democrats of politicizing the solemn occasion.

“Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it,” Trump wrote. “The Democrats are all ‘giddy’ about our magnificent American flag potentially being at ‘half-staff’ during my inauguration. They think it’s great, but it’s because they don’t love our country.”

Honoring Carter’s Legacy
The White House explained that the decision to lower flags was in line with U.S. tradition, which mandates a 30-day period of mourning for a former president. A state funeral for Carter, the longest-lived U.S. president, is set for January 9, followed by six days of national commemoration. Biden urged Americans to reflect on Carter’s contributions and legacy.

Trump Leaves Room for Change
Despite his past criticisms of Carter’s policies, Trump confirmed he would attend the funeral service, acknowledging Carter’s dedication to the nation. “While I strongly disagreed with him politically, I realized he truly loved and respected our country,” Trump stated. However, he hinted at a possible reversal of the flag directive, saying, “The half-staff ‘may’ happen; let’s see how it plays out.”

White House Dismisses Reversal Speculations
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre emphasized that the administration’s decision to honor Carter would not change, underscoring the significance of the tribute.

As the nation prepares for the overlapping events, the controversy highlights ongoing political divides even in moments of national mourning.
