Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, representing Namibia’s ruling South West Africa People’s Organisation (Swapo), has been elected as the country’s first female president following last week’s controversial election.

Election Results and Disputes

According to the electoral commission, Nandi-Ndaitwah secured over 57% of the vote, with her closest rival, Panduleni Itula, receiving 26%. However, Itula and his supporters, citing logistical issues and a three-day extension to polling in some regions, have disputed the election results. Itula’s party, the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), accused the election process of malpractice and declared they would not recognize the outcome.

As a result, most opposition parties boycotted the announcement of the results in Windhoek, the capital, on Tuesday evening.

Nandi-Ndaitwah’s Victory Statement

Once the results were announced, Nandi-Ndaitwah declared, “The Namibian nation has voted for peace and stability,” according to Reuters.

Swapo’s Longstanding Rule

Swapo has held power in Namibia since the country’s independence in 1990. Nandi-Ndaitwah, currently serving as the vice president, has been a prominent figure in the government for over 25 years. Her leadership has been trusted, and her upcoming presidency will join her in an exclusive group of female African leaders, with Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan being the only other female president on the continent.

Itula’s Charisma and Opposition

Panduleni Itula, a trained dentist and IPC leader, is known for his charismatic leadership style, which has gained traction, particularly in reducing Swapo’s popularity. In the 2019 presidential election, Swapo’s vote share dropped from 87% to 56% due to Itula’s influence.

Despite the electoral setbacks, the IPC has vowed to pursue legal action, urging citizens who faced issues with the voting process to file complaints with the police.

Swapo’s Legacy and Regional Trends

Swapo has long been the leader of Namibia’s struggle for independence from apartheid South Africa. Despite facing challenges in this election, Swapo’s position remains strong. There had been concerns that the party might follow the fate of other liberation movements in the region, like South Africa’s African National Congress, which lost its parliamentary majority earlier this year, and the Botswana Democratic Party, which was ousted after nearly 60 years in power.

Nandi-Ndaitwah’s presidency marks a significant milestone for Namibia, even as the opposition continues to challenge the election results.
