During a gala performance of The Devil Wears Prada musical in London, Elton John, 77, expressed gratitude to his husband, David Furnish, for being his “rock” during a challenging time. John revealed that he has been unable to attend many previews of the show, for which he composed the score, due to significant vision problems.
“I haven’t been able to see much because I’ve lost my eyesight,” he shared on stage. “But I’ve been listening, and, boy, it sounded good tonight.”

Vision Challenges After Infection
In a recent interview with Good Morning America, John elaborated on the eye infection he contracted in July while in the south of France. The infection caused him to lose vision in his right eye, with his left eye already compromised.
“It’s been four months, and I still can’t see properly,” he explained. “There’s hope for recovery, but for now, it’s hard to work. I can’t even read lyrics, so going into the studio is a challenge.”
A Slow Road to Recovery
John first disclosed his condition in September via Instagram, describing the infection as “severe” and acknowledging the slow healing process. “I have limited vision in one eye, but I’m healing. It’s a long journey,” he wrote, thanking his medical team and family for their support.
While recuperating at home over the summer, John remained optimistic about his progress.
Creative Pursuits Despite Challenges
Though retired from live touring since 2023, John continues to contribute to the music world. His latest project, The Devil Wears Prada musical, is based on the 2003 novel by Lauren Weisberger, famously adapted into a 2006 film.
Despite his current limitations, John remains determined and hopeful for a full recovery, cherishing the opportunity to stay connected to his creative passions.
