The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has introduced new regulations barring players from participating in overseas franchise leagues that overlap with the English domestic season. The decision aims to safeguard the quality and integrity of competitions like the County Championship, Vitality Blast, and the Hundred.

Impact on Players and Earnings
The restrictions, approved on Wednesday, could limit earning opportunities for English players who rely on income from leagues such as the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and Sri Lanka’s Premier League. Players with white-ball-only contracts will still be allowed to play in leagues like the PSL, but those with first-class commitments must prioritize domestic games.

IPL Remains an Exception
Despite the new policy, the Indian Premier League (IPL), which overlaps with the early English summer, will still receive special consideration. However, the ECB has stated it will be stricter in granting No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for other overlapping tournaments.

Addressing the Franchise League Boom
With over 20 major short-format leagues scheduled worldwide in 2024, the ECB’s move seeks to prevent players from “double-dipping” between tournaments and maintain the strength of English cricket.

Balancing Opportunities and Integrity
“This policy provides clarity to players and counties while ensuring domestic cricket remains strong,” said ECB CEO Richard Gould. The decision follows a record 74 England-qualified players participating in franchise leagues globally in 2023.

The new rules are expected to reduce the number of English players competing overseas during summer, reinforcing the ECB’s commitment to domestic cricket.
