A civil court jury in Ireland has awarded Nikita Hand nearly €250,000 ($257,000) in damages after finding mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor liable for assaulting her in a Dublin hotel in December 2018.
Assault Allegations and McGregor’s Denial
Hand claimed that after a night of partying, McGregor “brutally raped and battered” her in a hotel penthouse. She described extensive bruising and suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder following the assault. McGregor denied the allegations, stating that the sex was consensual and accusing Hand of fabricating the story. His lawyer referred to Hand as a “gold digger.”
Jury Finds McGregor Liable for Assault
After six hours of deliberation, the jury found McGregor guilty of assault, though he maintained that he never forced Hand into any actions against her will. As the verdict was read, McGregor shook his head but did not comment publicly. He later announced on the social media platform X that he would appeal the verdict and the “modest award.”

Hand Speaks Out After Verdict
In a statement outside the court, Hand expressed gratitude for the support she received and said the case served as a reminder that anyone, no matter how afraid they might be, can speak up and be heard. “You have a voice,” she said. Hand also emphasized the importance of standing up for oneself, especially when facing powerful individuals.
Separate Case Involving James Lawrence
In addition to McGregor, Hand also accused another man, James Lawrence, of assaulting her in a separate incident at the Beacon Hotel. However, the jury found that Lawrence was not responsible for the assault.
Court Evidence and Testimonies
During the trial, the jury heard testimony that Hand had been heavily drinking and using cocaine the night of the alleged assault. She claimed McGregor pinned her to the bed and assaulted her, leaving her with visible bruises and abrasions. A paramedic who examined Hand the following day described her injuries as severe, stating that it had been a long time since they had seen someone so bruised.
Impact on Hand’s Life
Hand’s life was deeply affected by the assault, with the jury learning that she had to leave her job as a hairdresser due to mental health struggles, her relationship ended months after the incident, and she had to move out of her home. She also mentioned that her financial situation worsened, as she could no longer afford necessary counseling.

McGregor’s Next Steps
McGregor, accompanied by his partner and family members, left the court without commenting. He later took to social media to express his intention to appeal the verdict and emphasized his focus on his family and future.
This case marks a significant legal development, with McGregor now facing a substantial financial penalty in connection with the assault allegations.
