President-elect Donald Trump has selected Pete Hegseth, a Fox News host and Army veteran, to serve as his Secretary of Defense. The announcement came as a surprise to many, as Hegseth was not initially considered a frontrunner for the position.
A Surprising Choice with a Personal Connection
Hegseth’s nomination appeared unexpected, with several members of Trump’s team not predicting him as a top contender. However, sources close to the decision revealed that Trump’s long-standing personal relationship with Hegseth played a significant role in his selection. Trump has long admired Hegseth’s career and considered him “smart.” Additionally, Trump was impressed by Hegseth’s military service, which he detailed in his book.

Although Hegseth was not on the original shortlist for defense secretary, Trump had previously considered him for the Department of Veterans Affairs during his first term, though he was warned that Hegseth might struggle to gain Senate confirmation. Trump, sources noted, also liked Hegseth’s appearance, believing he had the right “look” for the position.
Surprise Among Trump’s Inner Circle
The choice to nominate Hegseth caught many in Trump’s inner circle off guard. The Fox News host only emerged as a serious candidate for defense secretary in the days leading up to the announcement, with some advisers learning of his candidacy just hours before the nomination.
A Departure from Trump’s First-Term Picks
Hegseth’s selection marks a significant departure from Trump’s first term, when he appointed former General James Mattis and Army Secretary Mark Esper to lead the Pentagon. Both Mattis and Esper were highly regarded initially but fell out of favor with Trump, leading to Mattis’s resignation and Esper’s firing.
A Pentagon official told CNN, “Everyone is simply shocked” by Hegseth’s nomination. Many officials, including former Trump staffers, were reportedly taken by surprise and expressed uncertainty about the nomination’s implications.
Confirmation Challenges Ahead
Hegseth’s nomination is expected to face scrutiny and could lead to a contentious confirmation process. While Senate Republicans, now in the majority, are likely to support Trump’s nominations, the President’s picks can only afford to lose a small number of Republican votes for confirmation.
Alaska Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski was visibly surprised upon hearing the news, commenting “wow” in response. Senator Todd Young of Indiana, who has been critical of Trump in the past, expressed a desire to learn more about Hegseth’s qualifications and vision for the Pentagon. North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis simply called the nomination “Interesting.”

Trump’s Praise for Hegseth
In a statement announcing Hegseth’s selection, Trump highlighted his military service and his role as a Fox News host. Trump praised Hegseth as a “Warrior for the Troops and for the Country,” emphasizing his toughness, intelligence, and commitment to the “America First” agenda.
“Pete is tough, smart, and a true believer in America First,” Trump said. “With Pete at the helm, America’s enemies are on notice — our military will be great again, and America will never back down.”
