Former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Adam Gilchrist has shared his picks for the top three Pakistan batters of all time. Known for his explosive batting and sharp wicketkeeping, Gilchrist reflected on Pakistan’s cricketing legends during a segment on The Big Break, offering insights into their impact on the game.

Number Three: Mohammad Yousuf

Gilchrist placed Mohammad Yousuf at number three on his list, praising the former Pakistan batter for his exceptional consistency and achievements. Yousuf, who was known as Yousuf Youhana earlier in his career, is particularly remembered for his remarkable feat of being the leading run-scorer in a calendar year. In that year, he scored nine Test centuries, a record that highlights his remarkable technique and composure.

Gilchrist explained, “Mohammad Yousuf, or Yousuf Youhana as he was known, was the leading run-scorer in one calendar year, scoring nine Test match centuries. He was a class act with so much composure. It was a transitional period for Pakistan cricket, and they built their match strategy around him.”

Number Two: Inzamam-ul-Haq

Inzamam-ul-Haq, one of Pakistan’s most revered captains and selectors, claimed the second spot in Gilchrist’s rankings. Gilchrist reflected on Inzamam’s key performances, particularly his pivotal role in Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup campaign.

Gilchrist recalled, “Inzamam arrived at the 1992 World Cup at such a young age. There’s a famous match in Hobart in 1999 where we chased down the total. I mention this not because I got runs, but because the turning point came when Mark Waugh took a brilliant catch to dismiss Inzamam. He went on to score a second-innings hundred. If he had been out earlier, that could have been a turning point for Pakistan.”

Gilchrist highlighted Inzamam’s match-winning contributions during crucial moments in Pakistan’s cricketing history.

Number One: Javed Miandad

Topping Gilchrist’s list was Javed Miandad, a legend of Pakistan cricket and one of the sport’s greatest figures. Miandad’s remarkable consistency and ability to perform under pressure earned him the number one spot.

“What stood out about Javed Miandad was his outstanding numbers, particularly in Test cricket,” Gilchrist said. “But what made him exceptional was the quality of the attacks he faced. He went up against the mighty West Indies, the formidable Australian team, and many other top sides. It was an era when most nations had strong bowling attacks, and Miandad consistently took them on with skill and resilience. That’s why he’s my number one.”

Gilchrist praised Miandad not just for his stats but for his ability to shine against the best bowlers of his time, cementing his legacy as one of the game’s all-time greats.
