The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is poised to take decisive action after India’s shocking series whitewash against New Zealand. The team’s inability to chase down a mere 147 runs in the third Test at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, has marked the first home series loss of its kind in decades. This defeat raised serious concerns about the performance of senior players, particularly Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who struggled against the turning ball when the team needed them most.

Reports suggest that the series against New Zealand may have been the last time Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja played a home Test together. The future of these veterans is expected to be discussed after the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Following the defeat, head coach Gautam Gambhir was seen engaged in a serious discussion with chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, indicating that significant decisions are on the horizon.
A BCCI source informed PTI, “While there may be informal discussions, substantial changes might not occur before the squad departs for Australia on November 10. However, if India fails to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final in England, it’s likely that this group of senior players will not make the trip.”

India’s path to the WTC final has become increasingly challenging, with the team needing a decisive 4-0 win in Australia without relying on external results. Should they fail, younger players like Sai Sudharsan and Devdutt Padikkal could be given opportunities in the five-match series against England scheduled for 2025. Meanwhile, Washington Sundar’s emergence as the leading wicket-taker in the series has positioned him as a potential successor to Ashwin, while Axar Patel looks to be the long-term replacement for Jadeja.

Rohit Sharma’s recent form is troubling; in his last 10 innings, he has averaged a mere 37.81 with six scores under 10 and two below 20. Similarly, Kohli’s average of 30.91 over 25 innings at home, with only one century, has raised alarms about his performance. A former selector noted, “It will be challenging for them to overcome the self-doubt following this humiliation, even with more favorable batting conditions in Australia.”
As the cricket world awaits the team’s next moves, the fate of India’s cricketing stalwarts hangs in the balance.
