In a small village in India, a family “deity” connects Kamala Harris and her maternal lineage to their roots, honoring her grandfather, PV Gopalan.

Shyamala, Harris’s mother, left India at 19 on a scholarship to study medicine in America, where Kamala and her sister Maya were born. Although the family has never lived in the village, Kamala’s childhood visits left a lasting impact, as evidenced by the posters that adorn shops and homes.

A large banner near the Sri Dharamshastra Temple proudly proclaims her as “the great daughter of the village.” The family has made several donations to the temple, including a recent £46 contribution from her aunt, which commemorates their support.

Retired bank manager N. Krishnamurthy, 80, expressed the villagers’ gratitude, stating, “She has brought such glory to this village. No one has ever done so much for us.” Villagers like Balaambika emphasized Harris’s impact on women’s empowerment, declaring, “All the women here are so proud of her achievements.”

Nineteen-year-old student Madhumita shared her inspiration from Harris, while Mani, a local grocer, expressed his hopes for her success, saying, “We will celebrate with sweets when she wins.”

Villagers eagerly await news of the election, with some calling for her as president, reflecting the deep-rooted connection they feel to her. Harris has often spoken about the significance of her Indian heritage, recalling her childhood trips to connect with her family and understand her roots.

Her aunt, Dr. Sarala Gopalan, describes Kamala as a caring person who has always been ready to help others. Their close-knit family has gathered whenever possible, cherishing memories together, including celebrations where Kamala donned a saree and embraced her grandmother.

Kamala’s last visit to India in 2009 was poignant, as she honored her mother’s memory by immersing her ashes in Chennai. Dr. Gopalan remains unfazed by criticism aimed at her niece, choosing to focus on her accomplishments and values.

Reflecting on her childhood, Kamala shared how her grandfather taught her the importance of democracy during long walks on the beach. These early lessons sparked her passion for public service.

As the world watches the US elections, the residents of her ancestral village hold their breath, praying for their daughter’s success and celebrating the pride she brings to their community.
