Revenge is a central theme in the much-anticipated second season of “Squid Game,” as the show’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk teases a larger cast and even more gripping challenges than the original. Speaking at the first global promotional event for the new season in Lucca, Italy, Hwang also hinted at plans for a third season and the potential for an English-language adaptation.

Record-Breaking Success Sparks Renewals
Since its 2021 debut, “Squid Game” has become Netflix’s most-watched series, achieving global acclaim. Hwang won an Emmy for Outstanding Directing in a drama, while lead actor Lee Jung-jae made history as the first Asian to win Best Actor for a drama series. With such a massive following, Netflix quickly renewed the show, with season two arriving on December 26 and a third and final season slated for 2025.

Gi-hun’s Quest for Justice in Season 2
In season two, protagonist Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) returns to the deadly games with a new purpose—not to win, but to end them. “Gi-hun is a very different person this season. He’s driven by revenge and wants to bring those behind the games to justice,” Hwang revealed. Taking place three years after season one, the new episodes will introduce a larger ensemble cast and fresh, suspenseful games that promise to captivate viewers once again.

Pressure to Raise the Bar
At the Lucca Comics & Games event, Lee Jung-jae admitted feeling the pressure to surpass the original. His character, formerly a gambling addict, has evolved significantly, now seeking revenge and justice in a storyline that ups the stakes with new, dangerous challenges.

Rumors of an English-Language Adaptation
Reports from Deadline indicate that David Fincher, the director behind Fight Club, may be working on an English-language adaptation of “Squid Game” for Netflix. When asked, Hwang expressed admiration for Fincher, saying, “If he does take it on, I’m excited to see what he creates,” but emphasized that nothing has been confirmed.

“Squid Game” Phenomenon Continues
With Hwang confirming that a third season is already in post-production, the “Squid Game” franchise shows no signs of slowing down. As the December release approaches, fans eagerly await the next chapter in this thrilling saga that combines high-stakes action with profound social commentary.
