The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has issued a new directive ensuring that all mobile phones in the country will soon be compatible with hearing aids. This mandate, released on October 17, 2024, is aimed at making smartphones more accessible to individuals with hearing impairments.

Deadline for Smartphone Manufacturers

Smartphone manufacturers now have until 2026 to stop selling devices that are incompatible with hearing aids. The transition period for nationwide service providers is set at 30 months, while non-nationwide providers have up to 42 months to comply with the new regulation.

Simplified Bluetooth Pairing Required

In addition to hearing aid compatibility, the new FCC rules mandate that smartphones must feature simpler Bluetooth pairing options. The FCC has warned manufacturers against incorporating proprietary Bluetooth standards that could make connecting to hearing aids more difficult.

Volume Control and Product Transparency

Under the new guidelines, smartphones will also need to meet specific volume control standards. Manufacturers are now required to include hearing aid compatibility details in product information on their websites or on packaging, ensuring that consumers are fully informed about the accessibility features of their devices.

Apple’s Hearing Aid Integration

This new mandate comes shortly after Apple’s announcement that its AirPods Pro 2 would be equipped with hearing aid functionality. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved the AirPods Pro 2 as over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids. Apple’s hearing aid feature is a software-based application that integrates with iPhones, using iOS HealthKit to customize the device based on individual hearing levels.

Once configured, the AirPods Pro 2 can function as an OTC hearing aid, amplifying sounds for people aged 18 and older with mild to moderate hearing impairments.
