The Non-Resident Pakistanis (NRP) of Washington, D.C., hosted a meet-and-greet event at the Pak American Cultural Centre to introduce the vision of the Karachi World Medical City, a large-scale medical facility aimed at transforming healthcare services.

NRP’s Vision for Healthcare and Development

Speaking online from Washington, D.C., Shahab Qarni of the NRP Mission highlighted the diaspora’s deep interest in sectors such as health, education, economics, and social development. While these areas remain a priority, healthcare stands out as a particularly significant focus.

Nadeem Rizvi, MD of NRP, also joining virtually, clarified that the initiative is not a welfare or social program but a business venture. He emphasized Karachi’s strategic location as an ideal hub for investment, exports, education, and women’s empowerment. The Karachi World Medical City is envisioned as a medical facility spread over two miles, catering to both local and international patients.

Karachi’s Potential for Medical Tourism

Ambassador Jamil Ahmed Khan, former envoy to multiple countries, underscored Karachi’s importance as a mega city with a realistic population nearing 30 million. Given its geographic accessibility to South Asia and Africa, he noted that medical tourism could thrive in Karachi.

Pakistan boasts world-class doctors and nurses, yet a shortage of medical professionals persists. With over 30,000 Pakistani doctors and specialists working abroad, establishing world-class facilities could encourage their return to Pakistan.

Interest from International Stakeholders

Kanwal Bukhari of USAID, speaking from the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, expressed interest in reviewing the project’s plans. She highlighted existing U.S. investment and financing programs in Pakistan and suggested a hybrid model, where paying patients fund subsidized services for the underprivileged.

Local and International Experts Share Perspectives

Prominent healthcare professionals also weighed in on the initiative:

  • Dr. Jabbar Khattak found the concept exciting, suggesting that existing government and private medical facilities could be upgraded and integrated into the project. He emphasized the need for continuous engagement to move the idea forward.
  • Dr. Jaipal Chhabria acknowledged the challenges of implementation, pointing to institutional hurdles and a lack of willpower in Pakistan.
  • Rahat Naz, joining from abroad, stressed the need for global experts to contribute to professional development in Pakistan’s healthcare sector.
  • Mubashir Malik, visiting from Canada, drew parallels with countries renowned for medical tourism, particularly those specializing in surgical procedures. He questioned why, if Pakistani doctors excel abroad, similar high-quality hospitals couldn’t be established at home.

A Step Toward Transforming Healthcare in Pakistan

The Karachi World Medical City initiative has sparked enthusiasm and debate among stakeholders. The next phase will require strategic planning, investment, and collaboration to turn this ambitious vision into a game-changing reality for Pakistan’s healthcare sector.
