Gwadar International Airport, a newly constructed $200-million facility funded by China, is set to begin flights to Muscat on January 10, 2024, as announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s office on Monday. The airport’s opening, delayed due to security concerns, marks a significant step in improving regional connectivity.
State-of-the-Art Facility
Designed to handle both domestic and international traffic, Gwadar International Airport is among Pakistan’s largest airports. With the capacity to accommodate Airbus A380 aircraft and serve 4 million passengers annually, the facility features advanced cold storage, cargo facilities, and banking services provided by the State Bank of Pakistan.

Security Delays and Reviews
The airport’s launch was postponed after an August security review, prompted by militant attacks in Balochistan. Security agencies, including the Airports Security Force and the Federal Investigation Agency, have been deployed to ensure safety.
Strategic Importance
Part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the airport represents a $65 billion Chinese investment in Pakistan under President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative. The nearby Gwadar deep-water port, developed in collaboration with Pakistan, Oman, and China, is nearing completion. The government is positioning the airport as a key transit hub and is in talks with private carriers from China, Oman, and the UAE to expand international routes.
Balochistan Security Challenges
Militant groups in Balochistan have historically targeted Chinese projects, viewing them as exploitation of local resources. Recent attacks, including a suicide bombing in Karachi that killed two Chinese workers, have escalated tensions. Beijing has urged Islamabad to allow Chinese security personnel on the ground, but Pakistan has resisted this proposal.
PM Sharif’s Commitment
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the significance of robust security measures at the airport, describing it as a symbol of the enduring China-Pakistan partnership. “Gwadar International Airport reflects the strong friendship between our two nations,” Sharif stated, expressing gratitude to Beijing for its role in the airport’s development.
High-Level Meeting
The announcement followed a high-level meeting attended by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, and other senior officials. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Privatisation Minister Abdul Aleem Khan joined via video link to discuss the airport’s operational and strategic potential.
