The Iranian state news agency IRNA, citing the Ministry of Culture, has confirmed the arrest of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala. She was detained in Tehran on December 19 for allegedly “violating the laws of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Italy’s Response
Italy’s foreign ministry issued a statement on Friday, acknowledging Sala’s detention and confirming ongoing efforts to clarify her legal situation. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani revealed on Saturday that the exact charges against her remain unknown.

Conditions of Detention
Sala is reportedly being held at Tehran’s Evin Prison. Italian Ambassador Paola Amadei visited her in prison on Friday to assess her condition. While Sala has been permitted two phone calls to her family, she has not yet had access to a lawyer. Tajani expressed hope that her legal representative would meet her soon to learn the charges.

Journalistic Mission
Sala, a reporter for the Italian daily Il Foglio and collaborator with Chora Media, was in Iran on a valid journalistic visa. According to Il Foglio, she was there to report on a nation she deeply respects, despite its repression of free speech and threats against journalists.

Media Outcry
Il Foglio’s editor, Claudio Cerasa, called for Sala’s release, stating, “Journalism is not a crime. Let’s bring Cecilia Sala home.” Chora Media, where Sala produces the Stories podcast, noted that she had conducted several interviews and created three podcast episodes during her assignment in Iran.

Calls for Resolution
Chora Media explained that they initially kept Sala’s detention confidential at the request of her family and the Italian authorities, who hoped for a swift resolution. However, as her detention continues, demands for her release are growing louder.

Ongoing Investigation
The Iranian Ministry of Culture has assured that Sala’s case is under investigation and that the Italian Embassy in Tehran has been informed. Italian authorities are working diligently to ensure her rights and secure her release.
