Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, emphasized the enduring nature of trade relations between the two nations, despite 77 years of diplomatic ups and downs. He noted that the US remains one of Pakistan’s largest markets and a vital trade partner.
Enhancing Pakistani Exports in a Competitive US Market
Speaking at a meeting with the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Ambassador Sheikh underscored his commitment to expanding the presence of Pakistani goods and services in the US.
“The US is an enormous market that no single country can fully satisfy. My focus will be on ensuring Pakistani products compete effectively alongside those from other nations,” he said.
He also shared efforts to revive Pakistan’s GSP Plus status, revealing that a US congressman had assured support for the initiative. The ambassador remarked that the current political environment in the US presents a favorable opportunity, as previous opponents of the GSP Plus status for Pakistan were no longer in office.
Collaborating with Karachi’s Business Community
To strengthen trade ties, Ambassador Sheikh urged KCCI to provide research detailing existing partnerships with US companies and potential areas for collaboration. This information, he explained, would help Pakistan’s embassy in Washington engage with these firms to boost trade and investment.
Advocacy for Competitive Export Conditions
Addressing concerns raised by exporters regarding high interest rates and energy costs, the ambassador pledged to communicate their demands to Islamabad. He highlighted the importance of reducing interest rates to 7% and lowering energy tariffs to help Pakistani exporters remain competitive in the US and other global markets.
Recognizing Pakistan’s Strategic Importance
Ambassador Sheikh highlighted Pakistan’s geo-strategic significance as the fifth most populous country in the world, advocating for a perspective on Pakistan independent of its regional counterparts.
“Pakistan’s textile sector is fully capable of delivering state-of-the-art products that rival any country in the world. Additionally, Pakistan is among the largest importers of US cotton, demonstrating the depth of our trade ties,” he said.
Karachi: The Gateway to Pakistan’s Economy
The ambassador lauded Karachi’s pivotal role in Pakistan’s economy, citing the city as the hub of the majority of the country’s international trade.
“Karachi is the heartbeat of Pakistan’s economic activity, and engaging with KCCI was among my top priorities upon assuming office,” he stated.
Looking Ahead: Opportunities for Growth
Recognizing the quality and potential of Pakistani products, Ambassador Sheikh expressed confidence in their ability to thrive in the US market, given its vast size and demand diversity.
The ambassador’s proactive approach underscores the importance of fostering robust trade relations with the US while ensuring Pakistan’s economy remains competitive on the global stage.
