Amara Athar, Lahore’s first female Chief Traffic Officer (CTO), officially handed over her position this month to her successor, DIG Athar Waheed—who also happens to be her husband. This unique development has sparked widespread attention and commentary on social media.
DIG Appointment and Role Upgrade
Athar Waheed’s appointment as Lahore CTO on Saturday came with an elevation of the role to the rank of Deputy Inspector General (DIG). Reflecting on her tenure, Amara shared on X (formerly Twitter), “It was an honor to be your Chief Traffic Officer for the year 2024. May you all continue to work with dedication and professionalism for the safety of road users.”
Breaking Barriers in a Male-Dominated Field
Amara, a BS-19 police officer, made history in December 2023 when she became the first woman to hold the pivotal traffic control role in Punjab’s provincial capital. She succeeded retired Capt. Mustansar Feroz, who had served as Lahore CTO for a year.
At the time of her appointment, Punjab police emphasized that despite strong competition from male contenders, Punjab Inspector General (IG) Dr. Usman Anwar prioritized Amara for the position, recognizing her decorated career and commitment.
Pioneering Female Leadership Under IG Anwar
Amara’s appointment marked a continuation of IG Anwar’s efforts to challenge long-standing traditions in Punjab’s male-dominated police force. She was the fourth woman officer assigned a prominent role in Lahore under his leadership. The Punjab police credited this policy shift with promoting diversity and empowering female officers in field assignments.
A Legacy of Leadership
As Amara steps down, her trailblazing tenure has set a high standard for future leadership in Lahore’s traffic police. The transition to DIG Athar Waheed ensures continuity in professionalism and dedication, while also highlighting a unique moment of partnership in law enforcement.
