New York police have initiated a murder investigation following the horrifying death of a woman who was set on fire aboard a subway train.
Discovery of the Victim
The victim was found around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday at Stillwell Avenue station in Brooklyn. Officers on routine patrol detected smoke and noticed commotion on the platform. Upon investigation, they discovered the woman ablaze in a stationary subway car. Paramedics declared her dead at the scene, and her identity has yet to be confirmed.

Suspect Apprehended
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch reported that the suspected perpetrator remained at the scene, captured on a police body-worn camera while seated on a bench. The image was released to the public, prompting a tip-off from three teenagers who spotted the suspect on another train. He was subsequently arrested, according to Tisch.
Second Death on the Subway
On the same day, police responded to another violent incident at 61st Street-Woodside Station in Queens. A 37-year-old man was found fatally stabbed in the torso, while a 26-year-old man sustained multiple slashes and is now in stable condition.
Heightened Security Measures
This year, Governor Kathy Hochul deployed the New York National Guard to assist police in conducting random bag searches on subway riders after a series of high-profile crimes. Additional patrols have been dispatched during the holiday season to enhance safety.
Authorities continue their investigations into both incidents as New Yorkers grapple with rising concerns over subway violence.
