Cricket commentator Isa Guha has issued a public apology after calling Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah a “primate” during commentary on the third Test between India and Australia in Brisbane. The comment, made during Sunday’s broadcast, sparked backlash among Indian fans and was widely condemned on social media.
Guha’s Clarification and Apology
“Yesterday in commentary, I used a word that can be interpreted in several ways,” Guha began during her apology on Fox Sports on Monday. “Firstly, I would like to apologize for any offense caused. I hold myself to high standards of empathy and respect and meant only the highest praise for one of India’s greatest players, whom I admire deeply.”
Guha explained that her intent was to emphasize Bumrah’s extraordinary abilities, comparing his achievements to being beyond human, similar to phrases like “greatest player in the universe.”

“I framed it poorly and chose the wrong word. For that, I am deeply sorry,” she said, adding that her South Asian heritage made her especially mindful of issues around inclusion and respect.
Support from Fellow Commentators
Indian cricket legend Ravi Shastri commended Guha for addressing the issue head-on. “Brave woman. To apologize on live television takes courage,” he said, urging everyone to move on.
Former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist also defended Guha, highlighting her professionalism and integrity. “You’ve got our full support,” he said during the broadcast.
Social Media Backlash and Misunderstanding
The comment triggered a wave of criticism, with some fans accusing Guha of harboring a colonial mindset. Others demanded her removal from commentary by Fox Sports or the ICC.
However, Guha also received support from fans who believed her intent was misunderstood. “Given Isa Guha is herself of British-Indian heritage, does anyone genuinely think she was being racist?” one fan asked.
Guha’s Career and Legacy
Guha, who has Indian roots through her parents who emigrated from Kolkata, represented England in cricket, taking 29 wickets across eight Tests during her decade-long career. Since retiring in 2011, she has built a successful broadcasting career, becoming one of the most respected voices in cricket commentary.
Context: Comparisons to Past Controversies
The incident has drawn comparisons to the infamous “Monkeygate” scandal during the 2007-08 Border-Gavaskar series, where Andrew Symonds accused Harbhajan Singh of using a racial slur. Although Harbhajan denied the claims and his subsequent ban was overturned, the episode remains a contentious chapter in cricket history.

Guha concluded her statement by expressing hope that the apology would shift focus back to the ongoing Test match and Bumrah’s stellar performance, where he claimed five wickets in challenging conditions. “Once again, I am really, really sorry,” she said.
