Meta Platforms, under CEO Mark Zuckerberg, has donated $1 million to President-elect Donald Trump’s inaugural fund, signaling a notable departure from its previous stance. This move follows a contentious election campaign during which Trump had warned against perceived interference by the tech giant.

Building Bridges with the Incoming Administration
The contribution reflects the delicate balancing act faced by tech leaders whose companies have often clashed with Republican agendas but whose workforces lean left. With Republicans poised to control the White House and Congress, tech executives, including Zuckerberg, are making efforts to forge stronger ties.

Amazon’s Jeff Bezos, once a vocal critic of Trump, has also shifted tone. Following the election, Bezos congratulated Trump on social media, commending his political comeback. In a New York Times conference, Bezos expressed optimism about Trump’s approach, describing him as “calmer” and “more confident” than before.

Strengthening Relationships
Zuckerberg’s engagement with Trump dates back years and includes a November dinner at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. The informal meeting aimed at fostering rapport featured discussions on general relationship-building.

Leading up to the dinner, senior Meta executives Joel Kaplan, Kevin Martin, and Republican strategist Brian Baker held meetings with Trump’s transition team, including incoming White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles. Zuckerberg also met with Senator Marco Rubio and senior advisers Stephen Miller, Vince Haley, and James Blair.

A Personal Touch
Before the dinner, Zuckerberg showcased Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses to Trump, gifting a pair to the president-elect. The donation to the inaugural fund was reportedly communicated to Trump’s team before the dinner.

Meta’s Political Contributions
Historically, Zuckerberg and Meta have supported congressional candidates from both parties but have largely stayed out of presidential campaigns. Public records show neither Zuckerberg nor Meta contributed to Trump’s 2017 inaugural fund or President Biden’s 2021 fund. This latest $1 million donation underscores a significant pivot in Meta’s approach to political engagement under shifting regulatory landscapes.

By fostering connections with the incoming administration, Meta seems to be positioning itself strategically amid potential regulatory challenges.
