A woman in China, nicknamed “Pyjama Sister” by social media users, achieved viral fame and won a cash prize of 10,000 yuan (Rs 1.2 lakh) after abstaining from her mobile phone for eight hours in a unique competition. Dong, a sales manager from Chongqing, impressed judges with her calmness and ability to resist digital distractions.

Competition Designed to Test Phone Addiction
Held at a shopping mall on November 29, the competition was organized by a mattress and bedding store to promote reduced screen time. Ten contestants, selected from over 100 applicants, spent eight hours lying on beds without access to mobile phones, laptops, or tablets.

Strict Rules and Monitoring
Participants surrendered their phones and were provided basic calling devices for emergencies. Meals and drinks were consumed on the bed, with bathroom breaks limited to five minutes. To prevent deep sleep or anxiety, wrist straps monitored participants’ sleep quality and emotional states.

Dong’s Winning Formula
Dong excelled with a score of 88.99 out of 100, showcasing the lowest anxiety levels and the longest time spent on the bed without breaking the rules. Her decision to wear pyjamas during the contest endeared her to social media users, earning her the affectionate title of “Pyjama Sister.”

A Lifestyle Free of Digital Distractions
Dong attributed her success to her lifestyle, noting she avoids aimless phone usage and spends her free time tutoring her child. “I don’t feel attached to my phone,” she shared, emphasizing her ability to stay disconnected from digital distractions.

Promoting Reduced Screen Time
The competition is part of a growing trend in China encouraging reduced screen usage. Earlier this year, a Chinese PhD student garnered attention for traveling across 24 provinces in 134 days without using electronic devices.

This creative challenge underscores the increasing awareness of digital addiction and the benefits of disconnection.
