The United States has reiterated its unwavering support for Pakistan in its ongoing battle against terrorism and violent extremism. Speaking at a media briefing on Monday, Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the US State Department, emphasized the US’s steadfast commitment to assisting Pakistan in addressing these challenges.

“We continue to stand with Pakistan in its fight against terrorism and violent extremism,” Miller stated during the briefing in Washington.

Call for Peaceful Protests Amid Tensions in Pakistan
Miller also underscored the importance of maintaining peace during protests, urging all parties in Pakistan to avoid violence and engage constructively. His remarks come after a violent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest on November 24, where clashes between protesters and law enforcement resulted in the deaths of three Rangers personnel, two police officers, and, according to PTI, at least 20 party members.

More than 1,000 PTI supporters were arrested during the crackdown, including Afghan nationals, heightening political tensions in the country.

“It is crucial that demonstrations, wherever they occur, remain peaceful,” Miller said, stressing that the Pakistani government should manage protests in a way that prevents further violence.

US Comments on Regional Tensions
The briefing also touched on broader regional issues, including the strained relations between India and Pakistan. Miller acknowledged the ongoing tensions, particularly regarding allegations of a conspiracy to assassinate a Sikh leader, and confirmed that the matter had been raised with Indian officials. However, he declined to share details of the discussions, citing diplomatic confidentiality.

Avoiding Speculation on Policy Changes
When asked about potential shifts in US policy under the incoming administration, Miller refrained from commenting on President-elect Donald Trump’s stance on Pakistan or military support ahead of the transition of power. “It is not appropriate for me to comment on policies of an administration that has not yet taken office,” he stated.

Miller also addressed US-India relations but declined to speculate on whether the Biden administration would supply modern weaponry to Pakistan. “I have nothing to announce at this time,” he concluded.

A Delicate Diplomatic Balance
Miller’s remarks reflect the US’s attempt to balance its strategic relationships in South Asia while promoting stability and peaceful engagement in the region.
