A woman driving at 80 km/h (50 mph) on Melbourne’s Monash Freeway had a terrifying experience when a tiger snake, one of the world’s most venomous reptiles, slithered onto her leg mid-journey.
Emergency Stop on Freeway
Displaying remarkable composure, the woman managed to fend off the snake, steer through traffic, and pull over safely. Once outside the vehicle, barefoot and visibly shaken, she flagged down help. Paramedics quickly assessed her, ensuring she hadn’t been bitten.
Police and Snake Handler Respond
Victoria Police responded to the scene, along with Melbourne Snake Control expert Tim Nanninga. He successfully removed the snake and commended the woman’s calm actions, calling her safe stop “miraculous.” He noted that snakes often hide inside cars for days, making such incidents even more dangerous.
Australia’s Deadly Wildlife
This incident highlights Australia’s reputation for deadly wildlife, which includes venomous snakes, sharks, and spiders. Just last month, a hiker in the Snowy Mountains survived a snakebite after being lost for nearly two weeks in the wilderness.
Tropical Weather and Increased Snake Activity
Recent tropical weather in Melbourne has caused snakes to venture out of their natural habitats, such as creeks and riverbeds, leading to an increase in sightings and encounters. Experts are urging residents to remain cautious, especially during this active snake season.
