Oxford University announced on Wednesday that Lord William Hague, former leader of the Conservative Party and ex-British foreign secretary, has been elected as its new chancellor. He will officially assume the position early in the new year for a 10-year term, becoming the 160th recorded chancellor in the university’s 800-year history.

Imran Khan’s Bid Rejected
The announcement follows months after Imran Khan, former Prime Minister of Pakistan, applied for the position in September. Khan, who led Pakistan from 2018 to 2022, is currently imprisoned on charges he claims are politically motivated. His name was excluded from a shortlist of 38 candidates released during the first round of voting among Oxford alumni.

Hague’s Extensive Career
Lord Hague, a graduate of Magdalen College, Oxford, where he studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) and served as president of the Oxford Union, brings a wealth of political experience. He led the Conservative Party from 1997 to 2001 and held several high-profile roles, including British Foreign Secretary (2010–2014), Secretary of State for Wales, and Leader of the House of Commons. He is also the author of the Disability Discrimination Act during his tenure as Minister for Disabled People.

Hague represented Richmond, Yorkshire, in Parliament for 26 years. Reflecting on his election, he called it “the greatest honor of my life” and thanked his fellow alumni for their trust and confidence.

Role of the Chancellor
As Oxford University’s titular head, the chancellor presides over major ceremonies and serves as an ambassador for the university at local, national, and international levels. The position also involves advocacy, advisory, and fundraising efforts.

Successor to Lord Patten of Barnes
Lord Hague will replace Lord Patten of Barnes, who retired earlier this year after serving as chancellor since 2003. Hague’s extensive political career and longstanding ties to Oxford mark the continuation of the university’s tradition of distinguished leadership.
