The United States has reiterated its concern regarding the escalating incidents of terrorism in Pakistan, acknowledging the significant suffering experienced by the Pakistani people due to these acts.

Ongoing Consultations for Counter-Terrorism Efforts

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller addressed the issue during a press briefing in Washington, stating that discussions are underway to enhance both civilian and military capabilities to combat terrorism. He emphasized the commitment to maintaining dialogue with Pakistani leadership to tackle this pressing issue and affirmed ongoing collaboration with Pakistan in these efforts.

Surge in Terrorism in Pakistan

Recently, Pakistan has faced a surge in terrorist activities, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, where anti-state elements are reportedly conducting operations almost daily, resulting in civilian and military casualties. Just yesterday, over a dozen security personnel were martyred in two separate incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Details of Recent Attacks

The Public Relations Department of the Pakistan Army (ISPR) has not officially confirmed the fatalities, but sources indicate that at least eight security personnel were killed and three injured in intense firefights with terrorists in Tirah Valley. News agency AFP reported that nine militants were also killed in these exchanges.

The clashes began when armed men attacked an army camp near the Bagh Maidan center, leading to two days of fighting that temporarily shut down local businesses. Shops reopened after tensions eased on Tuesday.

Local Protests and Calls for Compensation

On Sunday evening, local traders held a demonstration demanding compensation for damage to their shops caused by mortar shells during the clashes. Additionally, several security personnel were martyred in a suicide attack near the Malikhel check post in the Janikhel area of Bannu district, with reports indicating that 11 officials were killed and two others critically injured.

Sources noted that following the Malikhel blast, armed militants launched an attack, resulting in a firefight with security personnel. The deceased and injured were promptly transported to a hospital.

Security Review Amid Rising Militant Attacks

These attacks coincided with a meeting of the Apex Committee of the National Action Plan in Islamabad, where the security situation was reviewed. Notably, Bannu district has seen an uptick in militant activity recently. On Tuesday, police successfully rescued more than half a dozen policemen who had been abducted from a check post on the North Waziristan border, with assistance from local tribal elders.

In a separate incident about a week ago, unidentified assailants targeted an under-construction girls’ primary school in the Shah Najib Lundidak Naikam Kali area. Earlier last month, three security personnel, including an army major, were martyred in a firefight in the Baka Khel area of the same district.

Calls for Peace and Action

In light of the recent violence, the Aman Jirga has called for serious efforts to restore peace and initiate action against armed groups, which locals claim are operating freely in the absence of effective law enforcement.
