President-elect Donald Trump has selected Linda McMahon, a prominent Republican donor and former pro-wrestling executive, as his choice for the Secretary of the Department of Education. The announcement was made Tuesday evening, confirming earlier reports from CNN. McMahon previously served as the Administrator of the Small Business Administration (SBA) during Trump’s first term, a role she held from 2017 to 2019 before transitioning to chair pro-Trump organizations, including the America First Action PAC and the America First Policy Institute.

Leadership and Vision
Trump praised McMahon’s leadership skills and understanding of education and business, stating:

“Linda will use her decades of leadership experience and deep understanding of both education and business to empower the next generation of American students and workers. We will send education BACK TO THE STATES, and Linda will spearhead that effort.”

Potential Department Changes
McMahon’s nomination aligns with Trump’s campaign promise to shift federal education responsibilities to the states and reduce the federal government’s role in local education. However, eliminating the Department of Education entirely, as Trump proposed, would be challenging and require Congressional approval. Instead, some federal programs may be reallocated to other agencies, with funding distributed to states and schools with fewer restrictions.

Under McMahon’s leadership, the department could also revisit Title IX regulations introduced during the Biden administration, potentially redefining protections for LGBTQ+ students. For instance, Trump has pledged to enforce rules that prevent trans students from participating in girls’ sports teams.

Professional Journey
McMahon co-founded World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) with her husband, Vince McMahon, and played a pivotal role in transforming it into a global media powerhouse. She served as WWE’s CEO until 2009. Her career in public service includes two unsuccessful bids for the U.S. Senate in Connecticut in 2010 and 2012, during which she spent nearly $100 million of her own money.

Support for Trump’s Campaign
McMahon has been a long-time ally and financial supporter of Trump. During his first presidential campaign, she contributed over $7 million to pro-Trump super PACs. Trump, in turn, supported her Senate bid in 2012 with a $5,000 donation.

America First Policy Institute
As the current chair of the America First Policy Institute, McMahon has worked with other Trump administration veterans to develop policy proposals for a potential second Trump term. The institute, described as a “White House-in-waiting,” has raised millions to fund its efforts.

Challenges Ahead
If confirmed, McMahon faces the task of balancing Trump’s ambitious agenda for education reform with the complexities of federal policies. While the complete dismantling of the Education Department may be unlikely, her leadership could significantly reshape its role in the years to come.
