Saira Banu, wife of renowned music composer, director, and singer AR Rahman, has announced their separation after 29 years of marriage, as reported by Indian media outlets on Tuesday.
In a statement released by Banu’s lawyer to India Today, the decision to part ways was attributed to significant emotional strain that had affected their nearly three-decade-long relationship. The couple, who married in 1995 in an arranged union, has three children: Khatija, Raheema, and Ameen.

“After many years of marriage, Mrs. Saira has made the difficult decision to separate from her husband, Mr. AR Rahman,” the statement read. “This decision comes after a prolonged period of emotional strain in their relationship.”
The statement continued, “Despite their deep love for each other, the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time. Mrs. Saira has taken this decision out of pain and agony.”
Saira Banu has asked for privacy and understanding from the public during this difficult period as she navigates this challenging chapter in her life. Following the announcement, their son Ameen also took to social media to request privacy for the family during this time.

AR Rahman’s last shared photo with his wife was at the wedding of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant.
