Police in Lopburi, central Thailand, were forced to barricade themselves inside their own station over the weekend after a mob of 200 unruly monkeys escaped and created chaos in the town.

Monkey Rampage in Lopburi

Lopburi, known for its long-standing monkey population, has struggled with increasing numbers of aggressive primates. Authorities have constructed special enclosures to manage the groups, but on Saturday, approximately 200 monkeys broke free and rampaged through the town, with a large group storming the local police station.

Police Forced to Take Defensive Measures

“We’ve had to ensure that all doors and windows are securely closed to stop them from getting inside the building in search of food,” police captain Somchai Seedee told AFP on Monday. He expressed concerns about potential property damage, including the risk to important police documents.

Around a dozen of the intruders were still perched proudly on the roof of the police station.

Traffic officers and those on guard duty were summoned to help ward off the monkeys, the Lopburi police stated on Facebook. Photos shared by local media showed around a dozen monkeys still lounging on the police station roof on Monday.

Attempts to Control the Situation

Down in the streets, police and local authorities worked to round up the rogue monkeys, trying to lure them out of residential areas using food as bait.

Cultural Significance of Monkeys in Thailand

Although Thailand is a predominantly Buddhist country, it has incorporated Hindu traditions from its pre-Buddhist era. Monkeys hold a special place in Thai culture due to the revered Hindu monkey god Hanuman, who assisted Lord Rama in rescuing his wife, Sita, from a demon king. This cultural reverence is reflected in the town’s annual fruit feast for the macaques, a tradition that has continued since the late 1980s, blending religious significance with tourism.

A Difficult Coexistence

The growing number of macaques in Lopburi has led to an increasingly strained relationship with human residents. Vandalism, aggressive behavior, and monkey mob fights have made cohabitation challenging. In response, authorities have implemented sterilization and relocation programs to reduce conflicts between humans and the macaque population.
