The New Zealand Parliament was suspended following a protest by Māori members who performed a haka to disrupt a vote on a controversial bill aimed at reinterpreting the Treaty of Waitangi, signed 184 years ago between the British and Indigenous Māori. Many Māori and their supporters view the proposed legislation as a threat to the rights of the country’s Indigenous population, which comprises about 20% of the 5.3 million residents.

Historical Context of the Treaty
Originally signed in 1840 by the British Crown and over 500 Māori chiefs, the Treaty of Waitangi established the framework for governance between the two parties. The interpretation of its clauses continues to influence legislation and policy today. Over the years, court rulings and decisions from a separate Māori tribunal have progressively expanded Māori rights and privileges. However, some critics argue that this expansion discriminates against non-Indigenous citizens.

Proposed Changes to the Treaty Interpretation
The ACT New Zealand party, a junior partner in the ruling center-right coalition government, has proposed a bill to legally enshrine a narrower interpretation of the Treaty of Waitangi. This move has sparked significant backlash from Māori representatives and their allies, leading to the disruptive protest in Parliament.
