Imran Khan, the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has officially announced a nationwide protest march to Islamabad on November 24, calling it the final call for a confrontation with the government. The protest, according to Khan’s lawyer Faisal Chaudhry, will not only be held in Islamabad but will extend across Pakistan and globally in areas with PTI supporters.

Leadership and Organizing Committee

In his announcement, Faisal Chaudhry revealed that Imran Khan has formed a special committee to oversee the protest preparations, though he urged not to disclose the names of those involved due to security concerns. The committee will have the authority to call off the protest if necessary, ensuring that no single individual holds full responsibility for the decision-making process. Chaudhry emphasized that the entire PTI leadership would participate in the march.

Frustration Over Delayed Protests and Previous Setbacks

There has been significant disappointment within PTI ranks following Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s abrupt end to the Swabi rally without announcing a protest date. This has added to the growing frustration among party workers who were part of last month’s Islamabad protest, which also ended prematurely. Despite these setbacks, Gandapur will lead a convoy from KP for the upcoming Islamabad march, under Imran Khan’s instructions.

Key Demands of the Protest

Chaudhry further elaborated on the key demands of the protest, which include the repeal of the controversial 26th Constitutional Amendment, the restoration of PTI’s electoral mandate, and the release of PTI workers currently detained without trials. These demands reflect PTI’s ongoing challenge to the current government’s legitimacy and the judicial system’s role in ensuring fairness.

Internal Division and Senior Leaders’ Concerns

Despite Khan’s resolve, sources had earlier revealed that senior PTI leaders have been advising caution, warning that an unplanned and hasty protest could backfire. They expressed concerns about the lack of preparedness, especially for an all-out protest or sit-in, and feared it could worsen the party’s situation.

Political Adviser Warns of Crackdown

In a recent statement, Rana Sanaullah, the Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs, cautioned that Imran Khan’s “do-or-die” protest call could lead to harsh crackdowns on PTI workers and supporters. He accused Khan of “mistreating” the party’s base by giving such an extreme call, warning that the government might use force to suppress the movement.

Imran Khan’s Message

On the other hand, Aleema Khan, Imran’s sister, spoke to the press in Rawalpindi, where she shared Imran Khan’s message to the nation. She explained that the protest was a call to all Pakistanis to stand up for their rights, judicial protection, and the return of PTI’s “stolen mandate”.

Imran Khan has urged various segments of society, including farmers, lawyers, students, and civil society, to join the protests. He framed the issue as a choice between living under martial law or enjoying freedom and democracy. According to Aleema, the public’s vote on February 8 in the general elections was a rejection of the oppressive system, and on February 9, that mandate was stolen from the people.

Call for Nationwide Uprising

Aleema Khan reiterated that Imran Khan is now rallying farmers, students, overseas Pakistanis, and other segments of society to rise up and demand freedom, rule of law, and the return of democratic integrity. She expressed concern that the 26th Constitutional Amendment was a step towards establishing a long-term martial law, and emphasized that the time has come for the nation to take action for their future.

Conclusion: A Critical Moment for PTI

Imran Khan’s announcement marks a critical juncture for PTI and its supporters. With growing discontent over the government’s actions and the party’s internal divisions, the November 24 protest march will be a defining moment for the political trajectory of both Imran Khan and his party. As PTI gears up for a potential confrontation, the outcome of this protest could shape Pakistan’s political landscape in the months to come.
