Australian cricket captain Pat Cummins has come under fire from former players and media personalities for attending a Coldplay concert on the night Pakistan defeated Australia to secure a rare 2-1 ODI series victory. His decision to rest for the match and attend the concert has sparked controversy, with some questioning his commitment to his national team during a crucial game.

Australia’s Resting Strategy and Series Outcome

Ahead of the third and final ODI against Pakistan in Perth, Australia opted to rest several key players, including Cummins, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Marnus Labuschagne. With the series tied at 1-1, the Australian team decided to prioritize their upcoming Border-Gavaskar Test series against India, scheduled to start later this month. However, Pakistan dominated the match on Sunday, winning by eight wickets and clinching their first ODI series victory in Australia in 22 years.

Cummins’ Concert Attendance Sparks Outrage

While Australia’s top players were resting, Cummins’ wife posted a photo on social media of the couple attending Coldplay’s concert that same evening. This sparked backlash from former Australian football and rugby players, including Mat Rogers and Scott Sattler, who voiced their disapproval.

Rogers criticized the decision, saying, “It was a decider, the one that matters, and our captain went to a Coldplay concert.” He added, “If you’re going to do it, just keep a low profile.” Sattler echoed the sentiment, criticizing Cummins’ wife for sharing the photo on social media, which he felt invited unnecessary criticism. “When you’ve made yourself unavailable to represent your country, you open yourself up to criticism,” Sattler said.

Michael Clarke Questions Selection Strategy

Former Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke also expressed confusion over the decision to rest key players with just 11 days remaining before the Test series against India. He felt that if Australia had won the first two ODIs, resting players could have been more understandable. “If Australia had won the first two games, then you can understand why they rest their big fish, but it was a series on the line,” Clarke said. He acknowledged the need for rest in preparation for the Test series but argued that resting key players for a one-day match was unnecessary.

Tim Paine Defends Selectors’ Decision

Another former Australian captain, Tim Paine, defended the selectors’ decision, suggesting that resting key players provided an opportunity for younger players to gain experience. “We’re blooding some youth and giving them experience while the big boys get ready for the Test series,” Paine explained, offering a counterpoint to the critics.

Looking Ahead: Pakistan’s T20I Series Against Australia

Despite the ODI series loss, Pakistan will continue their tour with a three-match T20I series against Australia, starting Thursday in Brisbane. The second match will be held in Sydney on Saturday, followed by the third and final match in Hobart on Monday.
