The 2024 U.S. election is poised to be the most expensive in history, with campaign spending projected to reach an astonishing $15.9 billion, eclipsing the $15.1 billion spent in the 2020 election.
Comprehensive Spending Overview
This total encompasses contributions for both congressional and presidential races, as reported by the nonprofit organization OpenSecrets. Remarkably, the amount spent has more than doubled compared to the 2016 election.

Harris Leads Fundraising Efforts
Vice President Kamala Harris has spearheaded fundraising in the competitive presidential race, amassing over $1 billion, with 40% of that coming from small donors. In contrast, former President Donald Trump raised $382 million directly for his campaign, with 28% from small donors, and an additional $694 million sourced from affiliated committees.
Major Donor Contributions
Key contributors have played a significant role in funding campaigns. Notably, reclusive banking heir Timothy Mellon donated $197 million to Trump’s campaign and related Republican efforts. On the Democratic side, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was the leading donor, contributing $93 million, while George Soros donated $56 million through his political action committee.
Advertising Expenditures
A substantial portion of the total spending—$10.5 billion—has been allocated to campaign advertisements. Both Harris and Trump’s campaigns have heavily invested in television, digital, and social media platforms. However, despite the growth of digital entertainment, online platforms accounted for only 17% of the overall ad spending. Among the swing states, Pennsylvania topped the list with an impressive $264 million spent on advertising for the presidential race alone.
