Seven families in France have initiated legal action against TikTok, claiming the platform exposed their teenage children to harmful content that contributed to the suicides of two 15-year-olds.
Allegations of Algorithmic Exposure to Dangerous Content
The lawsuit, filed in the Créteil judicial court, alleges that TikTok’s algorithm directed the teenagers to videos promoting suicide, self-harm, and eating disorders. According to lawyer Laure Boutron-Marmion, this is the first grouped case of its kind in Europe.
Families Seek Legal Accountability for TikTok’s Influence
The families are seeking to hold TikTok legally responsible for the effects of its platform on minors. Boutron-Marmion emphasized, “This is a commercial company providing a product to consumers who are minors. They must be accountable for the shortcomings of their product.”
Ongoing Scrutiny of Social Media Platforms
TikTok, like other social media companies such as Meta (parent company of Facebook and Instagram), has faced extensive scrutiny regarding content moderation. The platform has been involved in numerous lawsuits in the United States, where it is accused of luring children into addictive behaviors that harm their mental health.

TikTok’s Response to Mental Health Concerns
As of now, TikTok has not publicly commented on the lawsuit. However, the company has previously stated its commitment to addressing issues related to children’s mental health. In a statement to U.S. lawmakers earlier this year, CEO Shou Zi Chew highlighted the company’s investments in protective measures for young users.
