As the US presidential race draws to a close, South Asian countries are closely observing the outcome, preparing to adapt policies based on whether Donald Trump or Kamala Harris secures the presidency on November 5. Key regional players—Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan—may differ in their preferences but are ready to engage with the winner.

Limited US Focus on South Asia Expected

Experts predict that US policies in South Asia will mostly continue on their current course, with no major strategic shifts expected from either candidate. Michael Kugelman, an expert on US-South Asia relations, suggests that while a Harris administration might focus slightly more on the region than Trump’s, the difference would be limited.

US May Boost Infrastructure and Security Cooperation

The US is likely to explore infrastructure investments in South Asia, particularly working with India to counter China’s influence. This could include enhanced security cooperation, especially in maritime initiatives, according to Kugelman, director of the South Asia Institute at the Wilson Center.

Potential Shift in Pakistan-US Relations if Trump Wins

Currently, Pakistan is not a primary focus in US foreign policy, Kugelman notes. However, a Trump win could signal a shift in this relationship, potentially deprioritizing issues like climate change and clean energy, which have been emphasized under the current approach. Trump’s return could change these dynamics significantly, he added.

Status Quo Likely with Harris Victory

If Harris wins, experts foresee continuity in US-Pakistan relations, including ongoing economic support and potential cooperation on global issues like climate change. Harris would likely maintain a limited but constructive engagement with Pakistan.

Public Sentiment in Pakistan Favors Trump’s Return

Among Pakistan’s public, particularly supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, there is a belief that Trump could advocate for Khan’s release and support Pakistan’s stance in various matters, creating a unique interest in the election’s outcome.
