A 5.48-meter (18-foot) Australian crocodile named Cassius, recognized as the largest crocodile in captivity, has died at the age of over 110, according to a wildlife sanctuary announcement on Saturday.
Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat reported that Cassius, who weighed more than a ton, had been in poor health since October 15.

“He was very old and believed to be living beyond the years of a wild croc,” the sanctuary stated on Facebook. “Cassius will be deeply missed, but our love and memories of him will remain in our hearts forever.”
Cassius had lived at the sanctuary on Green Island, near Cairns in Queensland, since 1987 after being relocated from the Northern Territory, an area known for its crocodile tourism.
The saltwater crocodile held the Guinness World Records title for the largest crocodile in captivity since the passing of Lolong, a 6.17-meter (20-foot, 3-inch) crocodile from the Philippines in 2013.
