As the 50th U.S. presidential election on November 5 approaches, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are amplifying their campaigns. This contest between Democrat Harris and Republican Trump is shaping up as one of the closest in modern American history, marked by intense debates and rallies across the nation.

The U.S. electoral process follows the Electoral College system, where each state is allotted electors based on its population. Most states employ a winner-take-all rule, awarding all their electors to the candidate who wins the popular vote in that state. To secure the presidency, a candidate must achieve 270 of the 538 electoral votes. This means elections are often decided in key “swing states,” which can shift between Democratic and Republican candidates from one election to the next.

This election cycle, seven swing states are particularly competitive, with polling showing each race within the margin of error. Here’s a closer look at these battlegrounds:

Pennsylvania

  • Electoral Votes: 19
  • Formerly a Democratic stronghold, Pennsylvania has become a tightly contested state. Trump narrowly won in 2016, while Biden edged out a victory in 2020. This year, Trump is focusing on rural white voters, emphasizing concerns over immigration, while Harris has promised infrastructure investments, aiming to revitalize the state’s manufacturing sector.

Georgia

  • Electoral Votes: 16
  • Georgia, which Biden won in 2020, has been a focal point since Trump’s first term, with legal controversies surrounding his attempts to overturn the previous election result. Demographic shifts favor Harris, who has targeted minority voters, but a pause on Trump’s election interference case could work in his favor.

North Carolina

  • Electoral Votes: 16
  • Traditionally leaning Republican, North Carolina is experiencing demographic growth and diversification that could benefit Harris. However, a scandal involving the state’s Republican gubernatorial candidate may complicate Trump’s prospects. The impact of recent storm damage may also influence the vote.

Michigan

  • Electoral Votes: 15
  • Trump turned Michigan red in 2016, only for Biden to recapture it in 2020. This year, Harris faces challenges with the state’s Arab-American community, which has criticized the administration’s Middle East policy, a key factor that could influence the outcome.

Arizona

  • Electoral Votes: 11
  • In 2020, Arizona went blue by a narrow margin. Trump hopes to regain support in the state by appealing to frustrations over immigration. Harris has countered by pledging renewed efforts to address border security and revitalize bipartisan immigration policy.

Wisconsin

  • Electoral Votes: 11
  • Wisconsin was pivotal in both 2016 and 2020. While Trump previously led against Biden, Harris has made this year’s race highly competitive. Both candidates view the state as a critical opportunity for a path to victory.

Nevada

  • Electoral Votes: 6
  • Nevada, historically leaning Democratic, is seeing a strong push from Trump’s campaign, particularly among Hispanic voters. Harris, however, has focused on economic plans that resonate with Nevada’s hospitality-driven economy, leveling the playing field.

As November 5 draws closer, both Harris and Trump are expected to intensify their efforts in these battleground states, where every vote will count in what has become a historically close race.
