Fashion Industry Pays Tribute
The Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) expressed their sorrow on Instagram, stating, “We mourn the passing of legendary designer Rohit Bal.” Known for blending traditional Indian designs with modern aesthetics, Bal’s work left a lasting impact on Indian fashion, inspiring countless designers and fashion enthusiasts.

Bal’s Career and Legacy
According to his official website, Bal graduated with a degree in history from St. Stephen’s College in New Delhi. After working in his family’s export business, he launched his fashion label in 1990. His designs drew inspiration from a rich variety of sources, from rural Indian crafts to the dynamic, modern urban landscape. His website describes his work as a “celebration” of Indian heritage, bringing traditional artistry to life in a contemporary form.

Designing for Celebrities Worldwide
Bal was celebrated for dressing numerous high-profile personalities, both from India and abroad, including Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Ranveer Singh, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Ivanka Trump, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Uma Thurman.
A Legacy Remembered
Sunil Sethi, chairman of the FDCI, shared his sentiments on Instagram, noting that the loss of Bal, affectionately known as “Gudda,” would create an “irreplaceable void in the fashion design world.” Sethi praised Bal’s attention to detail, particularly his iconic lotus motifs on modern silhouettes and his understanding of what resonated with contemporary women.
