In a bid to quell the uproar ignited by President Joe Biden’s recent “garbage” comments, Democratic nominee Kamala Harris emphasized her commitment to representing all Americans if elected. “I will represent all Americans, including those who don’t vote for me,” Harris asserted on Tuesday, expressing her strong disapproval of any criticism based on voting preferences.

Biden’s Comments Spark Outrage The political storm erupted after Biden’s remarks were perceived as derogatory towards supporters of Republican candidate Donald Trump. His comments were made in response to comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who had referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage” during a Trump rally. Biden stated, “The only garbage I see floating out there are his supporters,” according to a transcript released by the White House.

Clarifications Amid Backlash After the backlash, the White House clarified that Biden’s comments were directed at Hinchcliffe’s rhetoric, not at Trump or his supporters. However, the remarks drew comparisons to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s infamous “deplorables” comment about Trump supporters in 2016, fueling further controversy on social media.

Harris Stresses Inclusivity With elections approaching, Harris sought to mitigate the situation, stating she disagrees with Biden’s phrasing. “First of all, he clarified his comments, but let me be clear: I strongly disagree with any criticism of people based on who they vote for,” she told reporters. She underscored her commitment to addressing the needs of all Americans, regardless of their voting decisions.

Biden’s Further Explanation In a follow-up on social media platform X, Biden reiterated his position, clarifying that he was referring to the “hateful rhetoric” from Trump supporters at the Madison Square Garden rally as “garbage.” He described the demonization of Latinos as “unconscionable,” maintaining that his comments did not reflect the values of the nation. The White House also clarified that Biden intended to use “supporter’s” rather than “supporters.”

Harris Gears Up for Campaigning As Harris prepares to campaign in three additional states, recent polls show her holding a slight advantage over Trump.
