Houston is heading into a wetter and more unsettled stretch of weather, with rain and thunderstorms expected to become more frequent from Wednesday and continue into the weekend.

Tuesday is expected to remain hot and humid, with only isolated showers possible. But Gulf moisture moving into Southeast Texas will increase rain chances from Wednesday. A larger weather system and additional Pacific moisture could also bring periods of heavier rainfall later in the week.

The main concern for Houston is not necessarily one major storm, but repeated rounds of rain falling over the same areas. Heavier downpours are possible Thursday and Friday, raising the risk of localized flooding, particularly where storms move slowly or repeatedly pass over the same locations.

Houston will remain warm and humid early in the week, with temperatures around the low 90s. Temperatures are expected to ease into the 80s as clouds and rain become more widespread.

Residents should continue checking updated forecasts, particularly if they live in areas that have experienced street or drainage flooding in the past.

If heavy rain develops:

  • Avoid flooded roads, underpasses and low-lying areas.
  • Never attempt to drive or walk through moving floodwater.
  • Allow extra time for the morning and evening commute.
  • Keep phones charged and emergency alerts turned on.
  • Check road conditions before leaving home, particularly Thursday through Saturday.
  • If flooding begins, move to higher ground when necessary.
  • Remember: Turn around, don’t drown.

Residents can follow updates from the City of Houston Office of Emergency Management and local weather authorities as conditions change.

For families across Houston, this is also a good time to check emergency supplies, review flood routes and make sure everyone knows what to do if severe weather develops.

Survival Tip: Don’t wait until water is already covering the road to decide whether your route is safe. If heavy rain is falling and flooding has been reported ahead, turn around and choose another route early.
