The culinary scene of Houston is once again in the spotlight, earning six finalist nominations for the prestigious James Beard Awards 2026. Widely regarded as one of the highest honors in the food industry, the awards highlight excellence across chefs, restaurants, and hospitality leaders nationwide.
Southern Smoke Foundation earns national recognition
Among this year’s standout recognitions is the Southern Smoke Foundation, founded by acclaimed chef Chris Shepherd. The organization has been selected as one of the recipients of the Impact Awards, a category introduced recently to honor meaningful contributions to the hospitality sector.
Since its launch in 2017, the foundation has provided more than $16 million in emergency assistance to food and beverage workers across the United States, along with mental health support services reaching over 10,000 individuals. The Impact Awards will be presented at a ceremony in Chicago in mid-June, where the final winners will also be announced.
Top Houston restaurateurs and chefs make the finalist list
Several prominent names from Houston’s dining scene have secured finalist positions across key categories. Hugo Ortega and Tracy Vaught of the H-Town Restaurant Group are competing for Outstanding Restaurateur, recognized for their influence through establishments such as Hugo’s, Xochi, and Urbe.

In the Emerging Chef category, Adrian Torres has earned a nomination for his work at Maximo. Meanwhile, Agnes and Sherman has been named a finalist for Best New Restaurant, reflecting the city’s evolving and dynamic food culture.
Beverage excellence and rising culinary stars
June Rodil has been nominated for Outstanding Professional in Beverage Service, highlighting her expertise and leadership in the field.
Houston also has a strong presence in the Best Chef: Texas category, with finalists including Ope Amosu, Evelyn Garcia, and Henry Lu. The city has performed well in this category in recent years, securing wins in two of the past three cycles.
Texas contenders and past achievements
Beyond Houston, other Texas-based finalists are also competing in national categories. San Antonio’s Mixtli is in the race for Outstanding Restaurant, while chefs from Dallas and San Antonio are recognized in the Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker category.

Houston last secured a national-level win in 2022, when Alba Huerta’s bar program at Julep took top honors, marking a significant milestone for the city’s hospitality industry.
With a strong lineup of finalists and continued national recognition, Houston reinforces its reputation as one of America’s leading culinary destinations.
