Emergency officials are urging residents to review tornado safety guidelines and identify safe shelter areas in their homes before severe weather strikes. Tornadoes can develop quickly and cause extensive damage within minutes, making preparedness and quick decision-making essential for protecting lives.

According to emergency management authorities, the safest location during a tornado is a basement. Residents should move there immediately when a tornado warning is issued and take an emergency kit that includes essentials such as drinking water, a flashlight, a basic first-aid kit, and a fully charged mobile phone.

For homes that do not have basements, officials recommend moving to a small interior room on the lowest level of the building. Ideal shelter locations include bathrooms, closets, or interior hallways that are away from windows and exterior walls. These spaces provide better protection from powerful winds and debris that may enter the home during a tornado.

Authorities also caution residents about areas that offer little or no protection during a tornado. Upper floors of buildings are considered unsafe because they are more exposed to strong winds. Similarly, rooms with windows or those located along exterior walls increase the risk of injury from shattered glass and flying debris. Being outdoors during a tornado is extremely dangerous and should be avoided at all costs.

Emergency officials encourage families to prepare in advance by creating a household safety plan, deciding on a designated shelter area, and staying informed through weather alerts and local emergency notifications. Proper planning and fast action can play a crucial role in reducing injuries and saving lives during severe weather emergencies.
