With winter weather intensifying across many parts of the United States, emergency preparedness officials have issued an advisory urging older adults to take extra precautions to reduce the risk of injuries and emergencies during snow and ice conditions.

According to winter safety guidelines older adults face a higher risk of slips, falls, and isolation during extreme cold, making preparation and community support critical during the season.

Officials recommend that seniors avoid clearing ice and snow themselves and instead seek help from family members, friends, or neighbors to keep walkways and driveways clear. Snow-covered paths and icy stairs are among the leading causes of winter-related injuries for older individuals.

Adequate outdoor lighting, particularly near walkways and staircases, is also strongly advised to improve visibility during shorter winter days and reduce fall hazards.

Health and safety experts emphasize the importance of staying socially connected throughout the winter months. Regular phone calls or check-ins with family and friends can provide emotional support and ensure help is available if needed during severe weather events.

Emergency officials further advise keeping important contact numbers, including emergency services and close relatives, easily accessible near phones inside the home to allow for quick response during urgent situations.

For seniors who rely on mobility aids such as canes, walkers, or wheelchairs, authorities recommend thoroughly drying the tips or wheels before entering the home to prevent slips on wet or icy surfaces.

“Winter safety is not just about warmth—it’s about preparation, communication, and community,” officials noted, encouraging caregivers and families to check on older loved ones regularly during extreme weather.

Residents are encouraged to review winter readiness resources and safety checklists available through federal emergency management platforms to stay informed and prepared throughout the season.
