Houston’s FIFA World Cup host committee is rolling out a new sustainability-focused tour guide ahead of this summer’s international soccer tournament, inviting local businesses to take part in an environmentally driven initiative tied to the global event.

Hotels, restaurants and other hospitality-related businesses across the region can apply through the end of February to be featured in the guide, which will highlight eco-conscious options for World Cup visitors. Houston will host seven matches at NRG Stadium when the tournament begins in June.

Encouraging Green Practices Ahead of Global Spotlight

The initiative encourages businesses to commit to environmentally responsible operations as the city prepares for an influx of international visitors. Companies that meet the required standards and earn certification will be listed in a sustainability tour guide designed specifically for World Cup attendees.

Elizabeth Carlson, chair of sustainability for the host committee, said the program is meant to make sustainable practices practical and meaningful for Houston’s hospitality industry.

She noted that the World Cup represents a rare opportunity for the city and that the effort, branded as “New Year, New Hou,” is intended not only to help businesses prepare for global attention but also to improve long-term operations that benefit both the community and the environment beyond the tournament.

How Businesses Can Qualify

To be considered, businesses must commit to a set level of sustainable practices outlined by the host committee and complete an online survey. The extent of their commitments will determine their qualification level, with higher participation leading to greater recognition.

Sustainability requirements are grouped into four main areas: waste management, energy use, transportation practices and nature-related initiatives. Each category includes multiple actions at varying levels of effort, allowing businesses to choose commitments that best fit their operations.

Levels of Sustainability Commitments

In waste reduction, for example, a basic commitment could involve replacing Styrofoam containers with recyclable alternatives. A mid-level effort may include working with private recycling services, while higher-level commitments could involve reuse programs or encouraging customers to bring their own containers.

Businesses that aim for the highest sustainability designation must also seek certification from an external organization, such as the Green Restaurant Association or Green Key.

Who Can Apply and Deadline

The program is open to hotels, motels and restaurants operating within the Houston-Galveston Area Council boundaries. Applications will be accepted through February 28.

Once certified, participating businesses will be promoted as sustainable options for visitors attending the FIFA World Cup, positioning them as environmentally responsible choices during one of the world’s largest sporting events.
